The Mineralogical
Society of Tasmania
The Mineralogical Society of Tasmania is a group of people of widely varying backgrounds and ages (including many children) with an interest in minerals and all things subterranean. A few members are professional mineralogists or geologists, but most are amateurs, including gem cutters and nature lovers. The Society aims to bridge the gap between professional earth scientists and amateurs, and is active in promoting the collection and study of Tasmanian minerals and mineralogical sites. The patron is the world-renowned Professor of geology, Ross Large.
The Mineralogical Society of Tasmania is a member body of the Tasmanian Lapidary and Mineral Association Incorporated, and collaborates with various other clubs and societies for national and local symposiums, exhibitions and field trips. A national mineralogical symposium will be held in Zeehan in November 2008.
Visitors are welcome to all meetings. Most meetings have professional guest speakers, with recent topics including Dundas and Japanese minerals. A 'Mineral of the Month' session enables members to become better acquainted with various mineral species. We commonly have minerals and gems for sale, swapping, viewing and identification. Field trips are run around Tasmania, with the venue being published in our quarterly newsletter.
